Arrest warrants make clear selling arms to Israel ‘abets war crimes’

Carla Denyer, co-leader of the Green Party said:

“The ICC arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu, Yoav Gallant and Mohammed Deif shows that to continue selling arms to Israel is to aid and abet war crimes. It is utterly indefensible.

“The Government must recognise that their approach to the war in Gaza has failed. They must consider far more direct measures to incentivise a ceasefire including an end to arms sales, the introduction of divestments, boycotts and sanctions, prosecutions for all those who have committed war crimes and a plan for a viable Palestinian state.”

Responding to the US elections, Green Party Co-Leader, Carla Denyer, said,

“A dangerous bigot, bully, and liar is once again set to become the leader of the most powerful country in the world. A climate change denier, a proud racist and misogynist, and a man who has sought to subvert elections and incite insurrection.

On this dark day, we stand in solidarity with all U.S. citizens who fear a convicted criminal and a fascist in the White House. And we stand with all those around the world who dreaded this moment and must now live with its consequences, including those in Gaza and Ukraine.

Together, those of us who believe in democracy must work together to overcome authoritarianism and the politics of hate.”

Why won’t Labour even consider putting water companies back into public hands ask Greens

Responding to the news (BBC) that a new independent commission will soon launch the largest review of the water industry since privatisation in the 1980s, Green Party Co-Leader, Carla Denyer said,

“Water is a basic human need. It should be in public hands run for people, not profit. I don’t know why Labour won’t even consider this.”

Carla Denyer, co-leader of the Green Party said: “The claim that wealth taxes would lead to large numbers of people leaving the UK isn’t credible. This didn’t happen when changes were made to non-dom status in 2017, and research by Patriotic Millionaires has shown that 68% of those with over £1 million to invest support a wealth tax themselves. There are lots of reasons that the wealthy choose to live in the UK, including work, family and culture, and many are happy to pay a bit more if it means a happier and healthier society.

Between 2020 and 2022 alone, billionaire wealth in the UK increased by almost £150bn, whilst living standards for the rest of us fell significantly and public services decayed. It’s only through rebalancing our tax system to make it fairer that we can rebalance society, invest in our NHS and other public services, and ultimately increase the quality of life for ordinary Brits”.

The north must benefit from HS2 say Greens

Delegates at Green Party conference in Manchester have voted for HS2 to be funded and completed in full, including the entire Eastern leg and an underground through station at Manchester Piccadilly. The policy development comes as phase one of HS2 between London and Birmingham is well under construction.

Commenting on the revised Green Party policy, co-leader Carla Denyer MP, said:

“The Green Party has long supported the principle of a new north-south high-speed rail line but had serious concerns about the specific route of HS2 and the environmental impacts of this route.

“However, this first phase of HS2 between London and Birmingham is well under way and most of the environmental impacts of construction are already baked in. So this is a pragmatic decision by the Green Party. It moves us on.

“Crucially, we have also acknowledged that the northern leg of HS2 was always the most important in terms of tackling capacity issues on our railways as well as addressing regional inequalities. So the line must be completed in full.

“We also say loud and clear that our railways have to be built right – for habitats and wildlife, for local transport users, for affected neighbours and for government coffers. Greens will not support blank cheques or offer uncritical endorsement.

“We need to move at great speed to shift travel away from cars and flights to public transport. HS2, in full, can play an important role in achieving this shift.”

Green Party spokesperson on transport Councillor Matt Edwards, who is leader of the Green Group on Bradford Council, added:

“I am delighted that the Green Party conference has also backed Northern Powerhouse Rail, a high-speed rail line from Liverpool to Manchester and onwards to Bradford and Leeds and then the east coast. Successive governments have failed to invest in the rail network in the North of England and the Green Party have long advocated for the investment communities in the North deserve.

“Pollution and carbon emissions from transport remains stubbornly high. If we want to do something to address this, we need to invest in high-speed rail – but it has to be done right. Putting passengers and our planet at the heart of the project.”
